Below are presented case studies that show how our biometric technology was integrated into customers' products, Solution Partner products based on our biometric technology and a list of scientific papers that present researches and experiments, performed using our technology:

Case studies

The case studies are prepared using the information from our customers about their software based on our biometric technology. Each case study wording is approved by the corresponding customers:

  • Lenovo computer access system is based on VeriLook facial recognition software.
    Lenovo selected VeriLook to be the facial recognition engine for PC user authentication and file encryption in their webcam-enabled notebook computers. The company was looking for reliable facial recognition technology for their notebook computers at a price point that enabled them to keep their prices competitive. After considering many face recognition engines, Lenovo found that VeriLook best meets their requirements.

  • Bangladesh Voter Registration Project is based on MegaMatcher multi-biometric technology.
    The Bangladesh Voter Registration Project registered more than 80 million citizens using biometric face and fingerprint technology. After evaluating a number of biometric technologies for their duplicate search system, the Bangladesh Army determined that MegaMatcher from Neurotechnology was able to identify more duplicate registrations with a higher degree of accuracy than any other system tested.

  • Venezuela Voter Registration System is based on MegaMatcher Accelerator solution and MegaMatcher technology.
    The National Electoral Council of Venezuela wanted to update their existing voter registration system with a more open and cost-effective technology. The old system was built in 2004 and appeared to be expensive to maintain and expand. Ex-Clé has developed and implemented the new integrated biometric platform for the Venezuelan voter registration system using the MegaMatcher SDK and MegaMatcher Accelerator solution. The system was used during the 2012 Venezuelan presidential election and proved its speed and accuracy with biometric data from nearly 18 million registered people.

  • Sierra Leone Biometric Voter Registration System is based on MegaMatcher Accelerator solution.
    The National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone implemented a new multi-biometric voter registration system and sought a solution that would both ensure accurate registration of all eligible voters through de-duplication of the voter registration database and provide printed electoral lists and personalized voter cards. Zetes provided the National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone with multi-biometric AFIS and facial image voter registration de-duplication services using MegaMatcher Accelerator. 2.7 million voter records were processed in less than 6 weeks.

  • Kenya Voter Registration System is based on MegaMatcher multi-biometric technology.
    The Interim Independent Electoral Commission of Kenya (IIEC) required a voter registration system for the country's voters. The system has been intended for voter identification and prevention of duplicate registrations. CODE Inc. has worked with the IIEC to deliver a multi-biometric voter registration solution. The CODE Inc. Digital Solution for Electronic Voter Registration is based on MegaMatcher multi-biometric fingerprint and facial identification technology.

  • Indian States Criminal AFIS is based on VeriFinger and MegaMatcher technologies.
    Indian police departments required a tool for the investigation of criminal activity through the quick and accurate identification of latent fingerprints collected at crime scenes. SecureMantra Technologies has developed the Criminal AFPIS Enterprise Solution using VeriFinger, and then MegaMatcher multi-biometric identification engine with the first deployment in May 2002. Today, police departments in seven Indian states and the National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science of India are using the solution with more than a million criminal records in the databases.

  • Mexico Multi-Biometric Enrollment System is based on MegaMatcher Accelerator solution and MegaMatcher technology.
    Mexico's tax collection agency required a fast and accurate biometric system for their digital identification and certification system. Vangent Mexico business unit and Biometria Aplicada have implemented the Multi-Biometric Enrollment System (MBES®) for high-volume iris, face and fingerprint identification. More than 3.5 million taxpayers have been enrolled in the system with a goal of 5 million to be enrolled by 2014.

  • Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Passport Tracking & AFIS System is based on MegaMatcher technology.
    The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment needed a way to accurately identify and record Sri Lankan citizens working in different countries around the world, as well as eliminate the use of fraudulent passports. Cenmetrix has developed the CenAFIS solution, an Automated Fingerprint ID System that is used together with a passport scanner. Since CenAFIS came online in 2012, more than 100,000 people have been enrolled in the system, with 350 to 450 new enrollments per business day.

  • Indonesia Biometric Passport System is based on MegaMatcher multi-biometric technology.
    Indonesia has updated their passport issuance system, increasing the speed and accuracy of document preparation, verification and delivery. X/LINK Software has developed a distributed passport issuance system with a centralized biometric matching component. After evaluating a number of biometric systems, X/LINK determined that Neurotechnology's MegaMatcher provided the best combination of high degree of accuracy, identification of duplicate registrations, exemplary technical support and a low total cost of ownership.

  • Poland Biometric Passport System is based on VeriFinger fingerprint recognition technology.
    Polish Security Printing Works, working closely with the Polish government selected Neurotechnology's VeriFinger fingerprint recognition technology to be the verification engine for all newly issued passports. The VeriFinger-based fingerprint system was implemented as a part of the biometric data capture in all 130 passport offices throughout Poland. High performance and flexible licensing options enabled Polish Security Printing Works to quickly obtain, develop and implement the technology.

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina Biometric Passport and ID System is based on MegaMatcher technology.
    IDDEEA (the Agency for Identification Documents, Registers and Data Exchange) developed the biometric identification system in-house using the MegaMatcher Extended SDK. The system, which was launched in October 2009, uses both MegaMatcher Client and MegaMatcher Cluster and ensures quality and accuracy required to meet European Union standards. The IDDEEA is an administrative organization within the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is responsible for the personalization and technical processing of passports, identity cards, driving licenses and other identification documents for the nation's more than 4.6 million people.

  • El Salvador's National Passport System is based on MegaMatcher multi-biometric technology.
    General Security El Salvador selected MegaMatcher to provide the core multi-biometric functionality for the Republic of El Salvador's first nationwide multi-biometric passport and immigration system. National-level AFIS and multi-biometric identification systems help governments provide a higher level of security for their citizens, visitors and trade partners in the global economy. A strategic approach to implementation is enabling El Salvador to develop a robust national database with immediate applications for immigration and criminal justice.

  • Border control systems in Spanish airports use MegaMatcher, VeriFinger and VeriLook for multi-biometric face and fingerprint identification.
    Indra has deployed quick access border control systems based on MegaMatcher, VeriFinger and VeriLook in the airports of Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat for European citizens. The newly installed systems facilitate the rapid entry into national territory, and therefore the Schengen common European area, to travelers who own a Spanish electronic ID card or a European Community electronic passport. The systems perform a dual biometric test using facial and fingerprint recognition for passenger identity verification. All citizens of the European Union countries, the European Economic Area and Switzerland are eligible to use this system.

  • Childcare management system based on fingerprint identification was developed using VeriFinger SDK.
    The CONFIDENT Childcare Management System from Lifewares is used in daycare centers, churches and schools to control the dropping off and picking up of children by parents or guardians. Most childcare facilities manage the identity of children and their proper guardians using solutions like clipboards and papers, wrist bands, ID cards or claimchecks, but all of them are slow and unreliable. With the fingerprint recognition capabilities in CONFIDENT, every parent or guardian checking a child in or out of a facility accesses their account using their fingerprint.

  • Family of access and attendance control solutions: TouchAccess, TouchID and RobotID were developed by ComputerID using VeriFinger SDK.
    TouchAccess is a complete access control solution that offers convenience, security and cost-effectiveness of fingerprint identification in a solution that can be customized to integrate with existing access control systems.
    TouchID is Computer ID's time clock control system, which registers the user's presence withsimple touch-in fingerprint scanner.
    RobotID is a basic identification system that captures a fingerprint, performs identification using a specified database and shows the identified person's name or other data on the screen.

  • Océ has chosen VeriFinger for their Océ TouchTo Print functionality. This functionality allows people to print their jobs with only one touch to an integrated fingerprint sensor.

Our biometric technology in scientific papers

In addition to commercial software development, our fingerprint and face identification technologies are being used in a number of scientific studies and experiments in the biometrics and other fields. Below are a selection of research papers that present interesting ideas and methods for improving current biometric technologies.   • C. Gottschlich, T. Hotz, R. Lorenz, S. Bernhardt, M. Hantschel, A. Munk. Modeling the Growth of Fingerprints Improves Matching for Adolescents. In IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, 2011. http://www.stochastik.math.uni-goettingen.de/preprints/ModelingTheGrowthOfFingerprintsImprovesMatching.pdf.
    A simple method of rescaling fingerprint images for predicting how would appear juvenile's fingerprints years later is presented in the paper. The proposed rescaling method was applied to a 3.25 million fingerprints database; the all-against-all verification test showed that the equal error rate (ERR) was ten times smaller compared to the original database. VeriFinger algorithm was used for template extraction and verification during the tests.
  • M.O.Derawi, B.Yang, C.Busch. Fingerprint Recognition with Embedded Cameras on Mobile Phones. http://www.derawi.com/cv/publications/derawi_final_mobisec.pdf, 2011.
    A biometric method for mobile device user authentication is proposed in the paper. The technology tests were performed using two cellphones with cameras for making photos of fingerprints. The fingerprint database for the tests included all 10 fingerprints taken from 22 subjects. VeriFinger algorithm was used for template extraction and verification from the fingerprint images obtained with the cellphones.
  • C. Ryu, S.G. Kong, H.Kim. Enhancement of Feature Extraction for Low-quality Fingerprint Images Using Stochastic Resonance. http://astro.temple.edu/~skong/publications/2011-PRL.pdf, 2010.
    The paper presents the usage of stochastic resonance for enchancing feature extraction from low-quality fingerprints. The results of experiments with fingerprint images from FVC2004 DB2 database showed that adding Gaussian noise to low-contrast fingerprint images allowed to extract features from most of these images. VeriFinger algorithm was used for fingerprint template extraction and verification.
  • C.Whitelam, Z.Jafri, T.Bourlai. Multispectral Eye Detection: A Preliminary Study. http://www.icpr2010.org/pdfs/icpr2010_MoBT4.3.pdf, 2010.
    A problem of eye detection on a face across visible, multispectral and short-wave infrared band is studied in the paper. The experiments were performed using WVU Multispectral database and a subset of FRGC database, and showed promising results. VeriLook algorithm was used for comparison with the authors proposed method for eye detection on a face; the comparison showed similar reliability level.
  • H. Xu, R.N.J. Veldhuis. Complex Spectral Minutiae Representation For Fingerprint Recognition. In Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Workshops (CVPRW), 2010 IEEE Computer Society Conference on. http://doc.utwente.nl/72527/1/CVPR10_Xu_SMC_Final.pdf.
    The paper introduces complex spectral minutiae representation (SMC). SMC usage showed 2-4 times recognition accuracy improvement compared with location-based and orientation-based minutiae representations (SML and SMO). VeriFinger algorithm was used for fingerprint template extraction.

    The paper presents a methology of improving the identification accuracy of multimodal biometric systems by using ranks and scores. A classifier for each modality has been designed using the ranks and scores in order to detect identification errors and produce rank-level fusion schemes in a multimodal scenario. VeriFinger and VeriLook algorithms were used for matching fingerprints and faces correspondingly.

    An algorithm for detecting altered fingerprints is proposed and tested in the paper. Experiments were conducted with real-world altered fingerprints and synthetic ones using the proposed algorithm and NFIQ software for comparison. VeriFinger engine was used for extracting skeletonized fingerprint images and orientation fields during the experiments.

    A fingerprint biometric cryptosystem scheme based on a codebook named distance projection for biometric coding used to generate secured biometric template is presented in the paper. The experiments on the FVC2002 database showed that the proposed scheme can obtain positive results on both security and authentication accuracy. VeriFinger algorithm was used for fingerprint minutiae extraction.

    The paper proposes a renewable fingerprint minutiae template generation scheme to utilize random projection for template diversification in a security enhanced way. The scheme was tested with a database from FVC2002 and showed the desirable biometric performance. VeriFinger algorithm was used for fingerprint template extraction during the scheme development and tests.

    The paper studies the utility of level 3 features (pores, dots, incipient ridges, etc.) for latent fingerprint matching. Automatic algorithms for extracting and matching level 3 features are proposed. VeriFinger algorithm was used for fingerprint feature extraction and preliminary template matching using level 2 features (minutiae).

    The spectral minutiae representation is a method to represent a minutiae set as a fixed-length real-valued feature vector. Two novel methods of the spectral minutiae features quantization into binary strings (Spectral Bits and Phase Bits) were introduced to apply the spectral minutiae representation with a template protection scheme. The experiments on the FVC2002 database showed that the binary representations can even outperformed the spectral minutiae real-valued features. VeriFinger algorithm was used for fingerprint template extraction.

    A latent fingerprint enhancement algorithm, which required manually marked region of interest (ROI) and singular points, is proposed in the article. VeriFinger algorithm was used to generate a skeletonized fingerprint image for a given latent; the skeleton allowed to produce a coarse orientation field for comparison with the one generated by the proposed algorithm. Experimental results on NIST SD27 latent fingerprint database indicated that the proposed enhancement algorithm used together with the VeriFinger algorithm significantly improved latent fingerprint feature extraction accuracy.

    The study describes the testing of seven face detection algorithms; the results of their comparison are presented. The methologies of face detection algorithms quality evaluation and objective comparison was proposed. Each face detection algorithm was routinely tested in the labeled image datasets. VeriLook algorithm was among the tested and showed the best performance and highest face detection speed.

    The study researched the reliability and sensitivity of an automated biometric recognition software in analyzing tooth prints. During research, enamel rod end patterns were obtained three times from a specific area on the labial surface of ten extracted teeth using acetate peel technique. The acetate peels were subjected to analysis with VeriFinger SDK software to obtain the enamel rod end patterns (tooth prints) and respective minutiae scores for each tooth print. It was found that VeriFinger software was able to identify duplicate records of the same area of a same tooth with the original records stored on the database of the software. Comparison of the minutiae scores using Cronbach's test also showed that there was no significant difference in the minutiae scores obtained.

    In this study VeriFinger SDK software has been used to obtain tooth prints' (enamel rod end) pattern. A microphotograph of acetate peel imprint was used for biometric analysis. The study revealed that none of the different tooth prints showed intra- and inter-individual similarity.

    This research analyzes effects of interoperability on error rates for fingerprint datasets captured from two optical sensors and a capacitive sensor. A practical approach for improving performance of interoperable fingerprint datasets is presented. Several issues which need to be investigated to reduce the effects of interoperability on performance are revealed. VeriFinger fingerprint matching algorithm was used together with all three fingerprint scanners in the experiments.

    The paper proposes an algorithm to extract two major Level 3 feature types, dots and incipients, based on local phase symmetry and demonstrates their effectiveness in partial print matching. Since dots and incipients can be easily encoded by forensic examiners, the results of this research will probably have benefits to Next Generation Identification (NGI) systems. The VeriFinger matching algorithm was used in the experiments described in the paper.

    The paper proposes a simple non-linear calibration scheme, based on Thin Plate Splines (TPS), as sufficient to facilitate sensor interoperability in the context of fingerprints. The method is based on hierarchical Delaunay triangulations for synthesizing a super-template from multiple enrollment templates to increase coverage area, restore missing features, and alleviate spurious minutiae.     The paper presents a comparative study of fingerprint recognition systems with special emphasis on investigating the performance with regard to different combinations of fingerprint sensors and algorithms and the impact of ageing. The goal of this study was to investigate the capability characteristics of biometric systems regarding integration of biometric features in personnel documents such as IDcards and Visa application documents. Neurotechnology's fingerprint identification algorithm was used for testing among 6 other algorithms in conjunction with 11 different fingerprint scanners.

    A novel fingerprint sensor is described in the paper. The sensor combines a multispectral imager (MSI) with a conventional optical fingerprint sensor for improving usability and security relative to standard technology. VeriFinger algorithm was used in the experiments for fingerprint minutiae detection, extraction and matching.

The fundamental insecurities hampering a scalable, wide-spread deployment of biometric authentication are also examined with a focus on situations where a private key is stored on a smart card that is used for authentication in a networked environment.
